Applicants must have earned a Bachelor of Science degree in an Engineering or related field. For individuals stepping outside of their undergraduate field, additional background courses may be required as technical prerequisites. Although not required, the average program participant has an average of seven years of professional work experience.
Students are evaluated for admission into the Program by a committee composed of faculty representatives from the participating departments in the School of Engineering, and the Program Faculty Director.
Key elements in the admission process are: the applicant's overall undergraduate grade point average, recommendation letters, the student's ability to keep pace with heavy program demands, and their ability to make substantial, positive contributions to the Program.
An applicant may be admitted with a full academic standing or with a provisional standing. Additionally, the committee may also set certain conditions for a student's admission into the program.
To be admitted into the Program with full standing, the applicant should have a good prior academic record at an institution whose status and programs are accessible for evaluation and a demonstrated ability to handle rigorous and complex work professionally.
Admission to the Program with a provisional standing will be made when a student gives evidence of ability that is sufficiently convincing to warrant admission, but the quantity or quality of the student's preparation may be difficult to determine with sufficient certainty for unconditional admission. The provisions will be specified and transmitted to the student at the time of admission. The student will have 2 semesters to succeed academically and achieve full standing; otherwise, they will be separated from study in the Program.
Under special circumstances, students who hold a B.S. degree in an Engineering or related Science field may apply as a non-degree student in order to register for core courses or technical electives prior to applying for admission as a full standing student in the Program. As a condition for post-baccalaureate study, the written consent is needed of the instructor for each graduate level course in which enrollment is requested. If a non-degree student is later accepted into the Program on a full or provisional basis, only that portion of graduate level work (courses numbered 400 or higher) taken as a non-degree student and approved by the Program's Faculty Director may be applied in partial fulfillment of degree requirements. The term of the earliest course so credited will establish the date of entrance into the degree program.
Applicants should reach out directly to the program or department to which you are applying for specific program-related questions. Addresses for departments are in the Program Information section of the application or listed on their individual websites. Each program within the School of Graduate Studies is responsible for recommending admission of new graduate students. Final decisions are posted by our staff and can be viewed by logging in to the online application system.
The admissions team is here to assist in making your application and admissions process seamless. If you have specific questions relating any of the following topics, please call (216) 368-4390, stop by Tomlinson Hall, Room 203, or email gradadmit@case.edu.

Cutting-edge technology, cross-disciplinary environments, world wide communications, and economic forces drive today's industrial workplace. An ability to respond to these challenges and opportunities is essential for a company to compete successfully in a national and global marketplace. Thus, practicing engineers need to incorporate modern technological skills along with the economic realities of business operations. Rapidly changing organizational structures also require engineering professionals who can take on broad responsibilities while lending well grounded technical expertise to effective work teams.
To meet these demands, the Case School of Engineering offers a unique Master of Engineering Program that equips engineers in industry to continue along a technical career path but adds the dimensions of business, management, and teamwork skills. The Program differs from a traditional Master of Science degree in engineering by concentrating on current industrial practice rather than on research and differs from a traditional Master of Business Administration degree by focusing on the business and technical environment of engineering industries.
By integrating the disciplines of engineering and business and by developing the abilities needed to add value in a complex industrial environment, the Master of Engineering Program prepares its participants to function comfortably from the factory floor to the corporate boardroom.
Special Program Features
Participants can complete a Master's degree within a two-year, part-time, program of study
Technical elective courses are held in the evening hours or provided on via DVD through CWRU's Instructional Television Network (ITN) to minimize disruption at the workplace and home
The Program targets currently employed engineers who lend diversity, experience, and richness to the classroom environment
Core courses aim at equipping participants with knowledge on how engineering is practiced in contemporary industry
Student Support
To focus on enhancing the educational value of the Program, non-academic aspects are administered centrally through the Office of the Dean of Engineering. The philosophy and design of the Master of Engineering Program is aimed at the full-time working professional who, through a program of study in a job-related discipline, is able to maximize experiential learning. The Program's operating policy is one that minimizes the student's time spent on administrative matters. Registration procedures, DVD distribution for ITN courses, and questions relating to program administration are managed through one office for the participant's convenience and for consistency in communication.
Benefits to Participants and Organizations
Experience with the latest techniques and applications for effective engineering practice
Broad exposure to the "business" of engineering and technology
Opportunities to engage with other participants seeking to understand what today's organizations require from world class engineering professionals
Development of interpersonal and collaboration skills to help effectively communicate with non-technical colleagues and customers
Improved ability to understand and apply strategic vision to engineering practices
Development of the teamwork skills necessary in today's modern business environment
An increased awareness of the business and managerial competencies needed to operate successfully in today's industrial environment.
