Submit an application online.
Pay an online application fee by credit card.
Submit your Statement of Purpose.
Upload your transcript or academic record.
Submit your test scores (if required by your admitting program).
Upload two to three Letters of Recommendation.

Online Applications
TGS only accepts online applications during each application cycle, beginning the first week of September. You do not, however, need to complete the online application in one sitting. You can access your application and change your answers as many times as you like. Keep in mind, once you have submitted your online application, you cannot make changes to it.

The online application process basically involves three steps. To apply, you will need to:

Submit your application and pay the application fee.
View our decision.
Submit your enrollment decision.

Once you have created an account with the online application tool, please be sure to read the application instructions thoroughly and check with your program department for additional information before submitting.

Please note:

Your application will not be submitted until you have answered all of the required questions and paid the application fee (by credit card only).
Many departments accept students for the fall quarter only.
TGS only allows applicants to submit one application per year, with the exception of McCormick School of Engineering PhD programs. For example, if you submitted an application for Fall Quarter 2016, the earliest you may apply again is for Fall Quarter 2017.
Applicants may not apply to more than one program per year, nor may applicants apply to the same program multiple times within one year.
Duplicate applications will not be reviewed and duplicate application fees cannot be refunded.
All materials submitted in support of your application become the property of the University and will not be returned or forwarded.
To expedite the admission process, admission decisions will be conveyed via the online application. You may access the online application as many times as you like to check if a decision has been made on your file. If a decision is available, a "View Decision" link will appear. If a decision has not yet been made, no link will be present.
TGS also reserves the right to admit or deny admission whenever it believes that it has sufficient evidence to do so.

Statement of Purpose
All applicants are required to upload a Statement of Purpose while completing the online application. Your Statement of Purpose should describe the following:

Your purpose and objective for undertaking graduate study.
Any special research interests or qualifications you possess.
Why you chose to apply to Northwestern University.

The Statement of Purpose should be uploaded into the online application prior to submission. Unless your department's instructions indicate otherwise, your statement should be 1 to 2 pages in length, single-spaced.

Transcripts
While completing your online application, you will be required to submit one scanned copy of your transcript or academic record from each school you have attended. We do not require official hard or digital copies for the application process. Only applicants recommended for admission that decide to enroll are required to submit official transcripts as part of the enrollment process.

When uploading your transcripts, please be mindful of the following:

Do not send official transcripts unless you are admitted and intend to enroll at Northwestern University. Official transcripts received before an offer of admission has been made will be discarded.
Make sure your scanned transcripts are legible. Illegible transcripts will not be reviewed.
Please include an official English translation to accompany any foreign language transcripts.
Any fraudulent activity or discrepancies found between uploaded and official transcript(s) will result in the immediate revocation of admission and/or dismissal from Northwestern University.
If you are recommended for admission and decide to enroll, you will be required to submit one official copy of each of your transcripts to The Graduate School (TGS) Admission Office.

Test Scores
Depending on your admitting program’s requirements, you may need to take one of the following tests. Please review the information below to see which, if any, applies to you.

Graduate Record Exam (GRE)
Most departments require the results of the GRE test. Please visit your program’s website to determine their requirements. See the Academic Programs page for a list of all programs and their websites.

Official scores must be taken no more than five years before the intended quarter of entry and must come directly from the Educational Testing Service (ETS). For example, to be considered valid for Fall 2018 admission, GRE scores must be no older than September 2013.
Please request that ETS send your GRE scores to The Graduate School (TGS) using our ETS institution code of 1565. This includes applicants that are applying to doctoral programs in Kellogg. Please do not use the Kellogg code. That code is specific to the MBA.
You will also be asked to scan and upload a copy of your score report (if you have it available) while submitting your online application. This uploaded version is not considered “official” and will only be used for preliminary review purposes, until your official scores have been received from ETS.

See the GRE website for more information.

Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT)
If you are applying for a doctoral program in the Kellogg School of Management, you may substitute results of the GMAT for the GRE results. The institutional code for this test, which transmits your results directly to Kellogg, is 6WZ-3J-54. Please use this code, and only this code, for the GMAT. If your results are not sent to this code, Kellogg will not receive them.

You will also be asked to scan and upload a copy of your score report (if you have it available) while submitting your online application. This uploaded version is not considered “official” and will only be used for preliminary review purposes, until your official scores have been received from GMAT.

See the GMAT website for more information.

TOEFL or IELTS
TOEFL or IELTS test scores are required of most international applicants. Please visit your program's website to determine their specific requirements. See the Academic Programs page for a list of all programs and their websites. Students admitted to PhD or MFA programs will be required to fulfill The Graduate School's English proficiency requirement to become eligible for funding as a teaching or graduate assistants.  Please see the Graduate and Teaching Assistantships page for details.

TOEFL:

Official scores must be taken no more than two years before the intended quarter of entry and must come directly from the Educational Testing Service (ETS). For example, to be considered valid for Fall 2018 admission, TOEFL scores must be no older than September 2016.
The TGS's school code for TOEFL is 1565.
Test takers may be asked by ETS to choose the "department" to which they want their scores sent. While you should choose the department most closely aligned to the program to which you are applying, we do not use this information to distribute scores. ALL scores sent to school code 1565 are made available to our programs, regardless of the "departments" selected on the ETS form.

IELTS:

Copies of your IELTS scores must be sent directly from IELTS to your admitting department.
You will also be asked to scan and upload a copy of your score report (if you have it available) while submitting your online application. This uploaded version is not considered “official” and will only be used for preliminary review purposes, until your official scores have been received from ETS or IELTS.

Letters of Recommendation
The Graduate School's (TGS) admission committees are interested in letters of recommendation from those who are most able to assess your academic and research abilities in areas related to your field of study. Letters of recommendation are very important to the evaluation process, so choose your recommenders wisely!

When considering a recommender, give some thought to the following questions:

Does the faculty in the program to which you are applying know your letter writers?
Will they write fair and thoughtful recommendations for you?
Can they speak to your academic research and accomplishments and your potential for graduate study?

TGS requires a minimum of two letters of recommendation. Some departments may require more than two letters, so please consult your specific program’s website to determine if additional letters are necessary.

NOTE: All letters of recommendation must be submitted through the online application.

专业介绍

The master of science in computer science at Northwestern University is renowned for its award-winning faculty members, state-of-the-art research, and the considerable resources offered by a great university. Because the program is housed in a department with electrical engineering and computer engineering graduate programs, students are exposed to a learning and research environment in which interdisciplinarity prepares them for working world application.

Graduate students in the program can tailor a curriculum to fit their research interests and career aspirations. Students can choose from courses and research in artificial intelligence, human computer interaction, distributed interactive systems, theoretical computer science, and computer graphics and human computer interfaces for spatial applications, visualization, and computer entertainment.

Courses and research in computer science include artificial intelligence, including models of memory and reasoning, knowledge representation, natural language understanding, planning, and problem solving; human computer interaction; distributed interactive systems; theoretical computer science, focusing on algorithm design and analysis; “frictionless” proactive context and task-sensitive information retrieval systems; distributed and real-time systems, networks, performance analysis, prediction and scheduling, Internet, and grid application development; and computer graphics and human computer interfaces for spatial applications, visualization, and computer entertainment.
