1. Undergraduate degree (equivalent to US bachelor’s degree) in engineering, physics, or mathematics
If your degree is from a non-US institution, verify if your degree meets our bachelor’s degree requirement here.
If you have a MS or PhD in ECE from another institution, you cannot apply for the same degree University of Michigan.
2. 3.5 out of 4.0 GPA for the undergraduate degree
A strong emphasis is on fundamental courses (e.g. calculus, physics).
Based on the technical area you choose on your application, a strong emphasis is on how well you did in courses in the specific technical area.
1. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores in the 50 percentile or higher in all three test areas
Score must be less than 5 years old
2. 3 Letters of Recommendation
At least 2 from faculty/course instructors who are familiar with your work in the classroom and/or lab
3. Research experience
Experience of working in a lab or project with faculty
This especially important for students applying to the PhD program.
4. English Proficiency Test score (applicants whose native language is not English).
5. Academic Statement of Purpose
Statement about your academic and research background, your career goals, and how Michigan’s graduate program will help you meet your career and educational objectives. It should be 1-3 pages.
6. Personal Statment
This is not the Academic Statement of Purpose, but a discussion of the personal journey/story that has led to your decision to seek a graduate degree. This should be 1 page.

The Electrical and Computer Engineering Graduate Program Manual provides information on the requirements for the Master of Science (MS), Master of Science in Engineering (MSE), and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees. The Electrical and Computer Engineering Graduate Program is one of two graduate programs comprising the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department (EECS) at the University of Michigan. Each of the two programs, Computer Science Engineering and Electrical and Computer Engineering have their own areas of research and courses. Students enrolled in Electrical and Computer Engineering are primarily interested in the area of Electrical Engineering, Systems Science, and Computer Engineering.
