Either the Internet-based TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or IELTS (International English Language Test System) is required for all graduate students whose FIRST language is not English. All international students must show proof of English proficiency to be admitted to Lehigh. The English proficiency requirement may be waived if a student has completed a degree program at a U.S. university within the past two years; such a waiver may be granted after review of online application materials submitted by the applicant. Applicants should check with the appropriate admission office to verify if they are eligible for a waiver. Information regarding score requirements are posted on the College website.
An official transcript from each university attended is required once admitted into the program. All transcripts should be converted to the American 4.0 grading scale, if possible, and sent in a sealed envelope to:
Graduate Coordinator
Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics
367 Packard Laboratory

Bethlehem, PA 18015
Two (2) letters of recommendation are required from qualified individuals to evaluate the applicant's academic achievement and potential for graduate studies.
A $75 non-refundable application fee is required; this fee cannot be waived.
The deadline for fall semester applications is July 15. The spring semester deadline is December 1. The deadline to be considered for financial support for the following academic year is January 15 (students must have a minimum gpa of 3.35 to be considered for financial support.)
Financial support documents must add up to a minimum of the total estimated 2017-2018 yearly cost of $42,634 for: tuition ($26,280), minimum 12 month living expenses ($14,400), health insurance ($1,954), in the form of either family funds (original bank letter), government funds (original documents),or scholarships.
Admission to the MEM program is NOT awarding of financial support. The granting of research, teaching, or fellowship awards is by competition. The availability of funds is always limited.
Visa papers are issued only to students admitted as regular, full-time students, who show proof of financial support by submitting the appropriate documents.
Admission Status
An applicant may be admitted to a graduate program as a regular or an associate graduate student. Only regular graduate students are candidates for graduate degrees. Students who do not wish to enter a degree program may be admitted as non-degree students; see this link for information on how to apply as a non-degree student. International students must be admitted under regular status for immigration paperwork to be completed. Except for qualified Lehigh undergraduates, only those who have been officially admitted as regular, associate, or non-degree students may register for graduate courses.
Prospective graduate students who do not qualify for regular student status may be offered admission with associate graduate student status. However, since each department's classification and requirements of associate students is different, you must check with the department to determine if you qualify to be admitted under associate status. Associate students must complete the first nine consecutive credit hours with at most one grade below B-. They will not be permitted to continue if they receive a grade below C. After nine credit hours of coursework, associate students must petition for regular status. Individual departments may require more rigorous probationary standard.
Policy of Equality
It is the policy of Lehigh University to provide equal opportunity on the basis of merit and without discrimination because of race, color, religion, sex, age, national original citizenship status, handicap, or veteran status.
International Students
International applicants to the Graduate Programs of the P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science must hold a Bachelor's degree from an accredited U.S. institution or an equivalent foreign degree. Transcripts must be in the original language with an official English translation attached.

The graduate program in Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics (MEM) offers a challenging environment in which students work closely with faculty who are internationally renowned for their research.
Key features of the program include:
A comprehensive curriculum that accommodates students pursuing the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees as well as the professional M.Eng. degree;
Strong research collaborations with industrial partners and with faculty from other countries;
Unique laboratory facilities.
Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics graduate students typically conduct research in teams on interdisciplinary projects in areas that include materials processing and manufacturing, fluid-solid interactions, composite structures, smart materials, integrity and reliability of engineering systems, integrated product development, biomechanics, mechatronics, energy and the environment, and thermal-fluid systems.
The Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics offers two Masters degree programs: the Master of Engineering degree (without a thesis) and the Master of Science degree (with a thesis). Both programs require 30 credit hours of graduate work (audit courses may not be used towards the degree) and must satisfy the following University course distribution requirements, as outlined in the RCEAS Graduate Student Handbook. The minimum program for all Masters degrees includes:
Not less than 24 credits of 300- and 400-level coursework of which at least 18 hours is at the 400-level. Thesis credits count as part of the 400-level requirement.
Not less than 18 credit hours in Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics.
Not less than 15 credit hours of 400-level coursework in Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics.
No course below the 300-level in Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics can be used towards the degree; however, two courses (6 credits) outside of the department, but in the engineering field, at level 200 and above, may apply, with approval from a student's advisor and the Departmental Graduate Committee.
