Nanotechnology is a highly interdisciplinary field. A bachelor’s degree in any of the following fields is appropriate: physics, chemistry, bioengineering, materials science, electrical engineering, systems engineering, mechanical engineering, engineering and applied science. The structure allows students to match their background and interests to the curriculum in preparation for exciting new challenges. A background in math and physics is helpful in preparing you for the Master’s in Nanotechnology curriculum.
All below materials are requiered to be submitted by the specific application deadline:
Biographical information (part of the online application);
A personal statement;
Two [2] official Letters of Recommendation: one must be from a faculty member who is familiar with the candidate's scholarly abilities
Unofficial Transcript - submitted with application:
One [1] transcript from each university or college attended where course credit was earned, to be uploaded and submitted with the online application. It is required to be in English.
$80 non-refundable application fee: This payment must be submitted with the online application.
GRE - official score report for the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) - required by all programs:
The institution code to use for the GRE exam is 2888.
Test results must be valid at time of application submission.
You must take the exam by the application deadline.
TOEFL/IELTS - All international applicants and non-US Citizens/Permanent Resident applicants for whom English is not the native language must submit official scores for either the Test Of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
The institution code for the TOEFL exam is 2888.
Test results must be valid at time of application submission.
You must take the exams by the application deadline.
TOEFL Score Recommendations - a minimum of 100 is recommended for all programs. There is not a required score.
IELTS Score Recommendations - a minimum of 7.5 is recommended for all programs. There is not a required score.
We do not currently accept electronic score results for the IELTS. Test results should be sent to:

This requirement can be waived if the candidate has completed at least three (3) years of academic work on a full-time basis at a university-level institution in the United States or in a country in which English is recognized as the official language or where the medium of instruction is English, by the time of matriculation.
We do not have minimum required test scores or GPA. Averages can be found in some university publications, on some departmental websites and in media such as U.S. News & World Report and Peterson's.
Application materials, other than transcripts, may only be updated once after the application has been submitted. There is also no guarantee that updated materials will be reviewed, as the application is considered final upon submission.
Official Transcripts
All official transcripts should only be sent to Penn Engineering if you have been admitted and already submitted your enrollment form.
One [1] official transcript from each university or college attended where course credit was earned. This must be submitted by the issuing institution. It is required to be in English.
One [1] official final transcript, showing completion of the degree. You must also send a certificate of graduation, when the transcript does not list the degree earned. This must be submitted by the issuing institution. It is requied to be in English.
We do not require WES transcript evaluation.
If the transcripts will be mailed, please have them sent to the following address:

Nanotechnology, the application of the science of the very small, is an exciting field that is enabling solutions in alternative energy, electronic devices, medical diagnostics and therapeutics. Engineers are finding that when things are very small, interesting phenomena can occur simply due to their physical size. Examples of these effects include quantum confinement in nanoparticles, which are making electronic display screens with higher color purity as well as tumor and disease diagnostics for cancer detection; and next-generation electronic devices made from low-dimensional materials, which have electronic properties that have the promise to have higher performance than today’s silicon devices. However, this is not the only type of nanotechnology. Engineers are also finding that when things are very small, they can be arranged into systems of remarkable spatial and functional complexity, even if their behavior is explainable by classical physics. Examples include integrated circuit design and fabrication; the highly integrated systems in today’s handheld electronics and smartphones; and applications in the most advanced digital movie theaters, where image projection is accomplished through the coordinated microelectromechanical action of the millions of tiny moving mirrors on a silicon chip.
