You must submit the following documents in your application submission package:
A completed Online Application Form
All applications and recommendations must be submitted online.
ETS reports (GRE and TOEFL) must be submitted through ETS only. Hard copies received from applicants will not be accepted. You may upload unofficial score results directly to the online application.
Academic records (transcripts, mark sheets, proof of graduation, i.e., degree or provisional certificates and/or diploma) should only be uploaded as unofficial documents to the online application. The INI will only request official (hard copy) records from admitted applicants who accept enrollment. Any academic records sent to the INI without a formal request will be discarded
Applicants must answer “Yes” or “No” to the statement “If funding is available through your program, please indicate if you wish to be considered.” Applicants who choose “No” will not be considered for funding if admitted. Choosing “Yes” will not affect a decision on admission nor will it affect the eligibility for funding. The purpose of the question is to determine which admitted applicants to consider for funding. Applicants must also identify any source of funding they currently have or plan to request.
All unofficial transcripts
Must be uploaded to the online application
Applicants should not upload WES reports; they are not accepted unless requested and will be deleted if uploaded.
Admitted applicants who accept enrollment must be prepared to show Proof of Graduation from their undergraduate program. Proof of graduation includes final official transcripts or mark sheets, and final official transcripts, and a quality photocopy of a provisional certificate, certificate of graduation and/or degree certificate, and/or a diploma. Failure to provide these documents in the manner requested or at all, or failure to graduate will result in termination of enrollment.
Upload transcripts from all colleges and/or universities you have attended at both the undergraduate and the graduate levels, whether or not you earned a degree from that college or university.
All transcripts, mark sheets, and degree certificates that are written in foreign languages must be submitted in the original language and an English translation.
Applicants who have not completed their undergraduate program may apply; however, transcripts must show at least six (6) completed semesters.
If admitted and enrollment is accepted, proof of graduation must be submitted no later than the end of July as a condition of enrollment.
Admitted applicants who accept enrollment will be notified how to properly submit proof of graduation. Academic records submitted to the INI before a formal request is made may be discarded
Three Letters of Recommendation (online only)
At least two of these should be from faculty or recent employers
People who recommend you should know you well and be able to evaluate the quality of your work.
Official Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test scores
The GRE is required, as neither the GMAT or GRE Subject Test is accepted for review. Applications will not be considered complete until the INI receives an official copy of test scores. GRE scores will not be accepted if they are more than five years old.
To submit your GRE test results through the Educational Testing Service (ETS), use the following codes: #2074 (Carnegie Mellon U), department code #0404 (Information Sciences).
To ensure that GRE scores reach the INI office before the application deadline, applicants should take the GRE test no later than November.
(If applicable) Official TOEFL scores
If you are an applicant whose native language/mother tongue is not English, the TOEFL is required. The INI will accept the PBT (paper-based test) scores if the Internet-based test (iBT) is not offered in the applicant's country. The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test will also be accepted to demonstrate ESL proficiency.
To submit your TOEFL test results through the Educational Testing Service (ETS) use the following codes: Institution #2074, Department (no department is required, but you may use 99 "unspecified department" if necessary).
If you have taken the TOEFL or IELTS previously, you must submit a copy. If you have not previously taken one of those tests, you may request a waiver from taking it, but note that such waivers are rarely granted.
Non-native English speakers who fail to take the ibT TOEFL or IELTS may not be reviewed for possible admission if these test results are missing from their completed application and a waiver of the tests hasn't been formally granted by the INI.
Waiver requests are reviewed on a case-by-case basis and are granted solely by the admissions committee. Contact the INI with any questions regarding waiver eligibility or requests, ini@cmu.edu. It is recommended such requests be submitted no later than October to leave time to take the TOEFL or IELTS if the waiver request isn't approved. Waiver requests submitted after October may be rejected without review.
Essay and Area of Interest questions
Must be submitted online, as hard copies will not be accepted.
All technical and other certificates should be listed in your resume. Research projects should be addressed in the essay section in the online application.
A non-refundable application fee of $75
Payments may be submitted by credit card online.
Do not mail official transcripts until requested by the INI.
Transcripts will only be requested from admitted applicants beginning in February.
