Graduate Application Instructions
Visit our Graduate Online Application to begin or resume your application to our graduate program.

Deadlines
Most applications are due by the following dates:

Spring admission: October 1
Fall admission: December 31
Please review the Graduate Application Deadlines section to view the full application periods for each program.

Admission is based upon a student's overall academic and research backgrounds, GRE and TOEFL scores, academic transcripts, statement of purpose and recommendation letters and not upon financial need.

GRE Test
The GRE General Test is required of all applicants.

TOEFL Test
All international applicants whose “native” language is not English must take the TOEFL Exam. A minimum overall score of 84, with minimum sub-scores of IBT-R 22, IBT-L 22, IBT-S 18, and IBT-W 22 are required. The scores must be received by the application deadline for the semester in which students are applying. The TOEFL is not required if the applicant has graduated from a U.S. university, or if the applicant is a CMU student or alum.

Financial Aid:
Financial aid is awarded upon admission in the form of research assistantships based upon departmental resources and available openings. If available, financial aid is awarded for both the Fall and Spring semesters. There is not a special financial aid form.

Virtually all graduate students in the research intensive Ph.D. program receive financial aid, in the form of fellowships, that cover tuition, fees, and reasonable living expenses for the entire year. Thus, students can concentrate on course work and research without financial concerns or interruptions. All applicants are considered for financial aid. No special form is required. All full-time students in the Ph.D. program engage in research under faculty guidance.

Students in the Professional M.S. program are ineligible to receive departmental fellowships that cover tuition and living expenses. Students in this course-intensive program are primarily self-supported, but may be eligible to receive partial financial support in the form of hourly wages to support the teaching and research missions of the department. Students in the Professional M.S. program must complete at least two academic semesters before they may be admitted into the Ph.D. program. Only students in the Ph.D. program can be considered for departmental financial support in the form of tuition and stipend.

Application Fee
Please note that a non-refundable application fee of $70 is required of all applicants and only those applications received with the fee will be processed. Applications received without the fee will not be processed and the application fee cannot be waived.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the deadlines for the Fall and the Spring admission processes?
Please refer to the Graduate Application Admissions Deadlines.

What do I need to submit for my application to be considered complete?
A complete application consists of the application itself, statement of purpose, resume, three recommendation letters, transcripts, GRE score report and application fee. International applicants are also required to submit a TOEFL or IELTS score report.

Online application: Apply online!
Statement of Purpose and Resume: You have the option to either upload your statement of purpose and resume, or enter them directly into the online application as text.
Recommendation Letters: Once you access the online application, you will be required to enter the names, titles, and email addresses of your three recommenders. Your recommenders will then receive a link to the online recommendation form. All recommendations must be completed online. Any hard copy letters mailed to the ECE Admissions Office will be discarded.
Transcripts and GRE/TOEFL or IELTS Score Reports: Unofficial transcripts and score reports must be uploaded to the online application. This is what the Admissions Committee will use for review purposes. In addition, it is required that the ECE Admissions Office receive official electronic or hard copy GRE and TOEFL/IELTS score reports. The ECE Admissions Office will only require an official hard copy of your transcript if you are admitted and decide to accept your offer of admission. In order for transcripts to be considered official, they must be received directly from the university in a signed and sealed envelope.
Note: Please DO NOT mail any other paper documents to the ECE Admissions Office such as a resume/CV, publications, financial documents, or certificates as they will not be included in your file for review by the admissions committee. The only hard copy documents that should be mailed to the Admissions Office are official transcripts and GRE, TOEFL or IELTS score reports. If you have publications that you would like the admissions committee to review, please link to them in your online resume. Any additional hard copy material mailed to the ECE Admission Office will be discarded.

Also, please note that the ECE Admissions Office will not accept application material submitted by third party consulting companies. It is expected that each applicant will complete his or her own application. Exceptions to this policy include application material submitted by a fellowship/scholarship organization, World Education Services, or ETS.

专业介绍

Two Great Institutions
Carnegie Mellon's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Porto Business School in Porto, Portugal, offer a double-degree graduate program in engineering and business this fall.

The two year program gives participants the opportunity to study one year in Portugal at the Porto Business School and another year in the U.S. at Carnegie Mellon. Students must meet academic requirements from both universities to receive a master's degree in electrical and computer engineering from Carnegie Mellon and an MBA ("The Magellan MBA") from Porto Business School.

Program Overview
The ECE MS/MBA Double Degree is an international program offered by Carnegie Mellon University and the Porto Business School, Portugal and features a curriculum focused on technology and management. The program offers a Professional MS in Electrical and Computer Engineering (awarded by Carnegie Mellon) and a Master of Business Administration (awarded by Porto Business School). The program seeks candidates with an engineering or science background and a minimum of two years of work experience.

Effective fall 2018, all incoming ECE graduate students, including M.S./MBA students, will be required to complete a one-unit Introduction to Graduate Studies course in their first semester in order to receive their degree.

See the program brochure for more information.

Program Structure
The MS ECE/MBA program runs for one full year at the Porto Business School campus, followed by two semesters at the CMU campus. When entering the program during the Fall semester, the student would spend their first full year at the Porto Business School, and their second year (Fall and Spring semesters) at CMU.

The MS in ECE (96 units) corresponds to 8 ECE courses (12 units each), with 6 courses taken at the CMU campus and 2 courses taken at Porto Business School.
The full-time MBA program (640 lecture hours, 75 ECTS - European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) is fully run at the Porto Business School campus and further includes an international week delivered at a foreign business school.
