Application Checklist
Application fee
The application fee to the Single Degree E&TIM program is $65. Application fees can be paid by credit card using the E&TIM online application. Alternatively, application fees can be mailed to the E&TIM admissions office address listed to the right by check (made payable to Carnegie Mellon University) or international bank draft. Application fees are not able to be received by way of bank wire.
Official transcript(s) from all previously attended universities
Applicants must submit official transcripts from both undergraduate institutions and any previous graduate work. For a transcript to be official, it must be sent to the E&TIM admissions office by the university where the studies were completed. If you are currently enrolled in a degree program that you have not completed at the time you submit your application, please submit your current transcript. An additional (final) transcript must be submitted upon completion of your work.

You may expedite the processing of your application by submitting an unofficial copy of your transcript to the admissions office. An unofficial transcript can be submitted in several ways: by uploading an electronic copy through the Academic History submission option on the online application, by email (etim@andrew.cmu.edu), or by mail to the E&TIM admissions office address listed to the right.

If you upload unofficial transcripts with your application, we will review it. However, if you are offered admission, you will need to produce official transcripts prior to enrollment.

GRE score report
Applicants for the E&TIM program must take the GRE general test (Graduate Record Examination test administered by ETS), and must request an official GRE score report to be mailed to the E&TIM graduate admissions office. For a score report to be official, it must be sent the E&TIM graduate admissions office by ETS. The GRE codes for E&TIM are -- 1699 (department) and 2074 (institution).

You may expedite the processing of your application by submitting an unofficial copy of your GRE scores to the admissions office. An unofficial score report can be submitted by email (etim@andrew.cmu.edu), or by mail to the E&TIM admissions office.

TOEFL or IELTS score reports
Because of the accelerated nature of the E&TIM program, it is essential that students have a strong command of the English language. If you are an international applicant whose first language is not English, you must take the TOEFL test (Test of English as a Foreign Language administered by ETS), and must request an official TOEFL score report to be mailed to the E&TIM graduate admissions office by ETS.

The TOEFL code for E&TIM is 69 (department) and 2074 (institution). When prompted to choose a department, please choose “Graduate,” not “Graduate Management.”

To be successful at Carnegie Mellon, graduate students who are nonnative speakers of English need to begin their academic careers with a strong foundation in academic English and a high level of proficiency with speaking, listening, reading, and writing in English. Academic work requires the ability to comprehend, process, and master complex materials presented in English, both in written and spoken form. Students need to have the fluency to communicate their ideas and questions to faculty, classmates, research partners, and others, in a learning environment that is often highly participatory and demanding. Studying in a new culture also requires openness and flexibility to adapt to a new, and often very different, academic system.

Students who have sufficient language skills to begin academic work can take advantage of training in advanced academic English and cultural skills provided by CMU’s Intercultural Communication Center (ICC). Students are strongly encouraged to attend an ICC Language Support Orientation session when they first arrive to better understand if language work is appropriate for their success.

For this reason, the program requires minimum TOEFL scores of (Total= 100: Reading= 25, Listening= 25, Speaking=25, Writing= 25) or IELTS scores of (Total 7: Reading= 6, Listening=6, Speaking=6, Writing=6). These minimum scores indicate that an applicant has the fundamental building blocks needed for academic tasks and for continued language development once in the program. Previous academic work in the US (or other English speaking countries) is not a sufficient reason to waive the TOEFL /IELTS requirement as this does not necessarily indicate a sufficient level of English mastery.

Though the TOEFL test is preferred, the E&TIM program will also accept the submission of official IELTS scores (International English Language Testing System).

You may expedite the processing of your application by submitting an unofficial copy of your TOEFL scores to the admissions office. An unofficial score report can be submitted by email (etim@andrew.cmu.edu), or by mail to the E&TIM admissions office address listed to the right.

Financial Letter of Support
If admitted, you will be required to submit an official document Carnegie Mellon's Office of International Education as proof of funding in order to obtain immigration paperwork.
Resume
Applicants to the E&TIM program must submit an updated resume describing the applicant’s educational and professional background.

Resumes can be submitted in several ways: by uploading an electronic copy to the Employment submission option on  the E&TIM page on the online application, by email to etim@andrew.cmu.edu, or by mail to the E&TIM admissions office address listed to the right.

Essay Questions
Essays answer the following questions. Dual degree applicants should address goals for both programs:

Other than reputation, what most interests you about attending this graduate program in the College of Engineering at CMU?
What are your goals after you complete your degree, and how will our graduate program help you achieve your immediate and longer-term future career objectives?
What specific research is of interest to you and how would our program enable you to pursue your goals?
Describe how your work, research, educational or other life experiences have prepared you for graduate study in this program?
Letters of recommendation (3)
Three letters of recommendation are required to be submitted by applicants to the E&TIM program. Letters are typically written by professors or work supervisors. At least one of your three recommendations must be from a professional experience and one from a professor at the educational institution last attended.

For a letter of recommendation to be considered by the E&TIM graduate admissions committee, the recommender must complete a recommendation letter form. Letters of recommendation and recommendation letter forms can be submitted in two ways: by email through the E&TIM online application (to choose this method, an applicant must apply to the E&TIM program with the online application), or by mail, sent to the E&TIM admissions office address listed to the right. The E&TIM graduate admissions office will accept mailed letters of recommendation sent either by the applicant or directly from the recommender, but in either case the respondent must sign the letter envelope over the sealed flap.
Additional documentation (optional)
Applicants may supply the admissions committee with any additional information relevant to his or her application. Additional documentation can be submitted in several ways: by uploading an electronic copy to the additional documentation submission option on the Essays page on the online application (to choose this method, an applicant must apply to the E&TIM program with the online application), by email (etim@andrew.cmu.edu), or by mail to the E&TIM admissions office address listed to the right.
