A minimum 3.0/4.0 GPA and excellent GRE scores (top tiers in all categories) are our general qualification criterion for admission. However, we take all aspects of an application into consideration. This means that the strength of letters of recommendation and statement of purpose, as well as the GRE scores and GPA, will be part of the overall consideration.
Graduate Record Examination (GRE) Scores - Code 1871
Scores on the GRE General Test are a part of the application to the Graduate School. The department looks favorably at high verbal and quantitative scores at the 90th percentile or greater. GRE scores are one of the many components of the overall admission decision.
Please use CODE 1871 when you request your GRE scores to be sent to Vanderbilt.
Special Requirement for International Applicants: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
Applicants whose native language is not English and who have not received their education at an English-speaking university must submit scores on the TOEFL. International students should have a TOEFL score of not less than 89 on the internet based test. Since four to six weeks are usually required for scores to reach the Graduate School, you should take the test no later than November 19 in order for the scores to arrive by January 15. For more information on the TOEFL, please visit http://www.ets.org/toefl.
Please use CODE 1871 for reporting your TOEFL score to Vanderbilt if requested.
Test of Spoken English
This test is strongly recommended for international students who wish to be considered for teaching assistantships.
