Candidates holding or about to receive a B.S., B.A. or higher degree are eligible to apply for entrance to the graduate program of the Department of Macromolecular Science and Engineering. Normally an education in any of the sciences or engineering is appropriate, although some college-level background in chemistry, physics and mathematics is essential. The university rules require that a candidate for entrance into graduate school should have graduated in the top third of his/her class.
Applicants should reach out directly to the program or department to which you are applying for specific program-related questions. Each program within the School of Graduate Studies is responsible for recommending admission of new graduate students. Final decisions are posted by our staff and can be viewed by logging in to the online application system.

If recommended for admission by your department, the School of Graduate Studies will then make the final decision on your application. If you have been accepted with conditions outlining the need to submit one or more official documents, you can view which documents are missing by logging back in to the online application system and viewing your admission letter.
Test Scores: To send official TOEFL or GRE test scores through ETS, use the institutional code of 1105 for Case Western Reserve University.
Official Transcripts: PDFs sent by email are not considered official and cannot be used for verification purposes. Official transcripts must come directly from the institution either mailed in a sealed envelope or sent electronically to the addresses below. International students - Documents in languages other than English must be accompanied by certified translations in English.

Macromolecular science is the study of the synthesis, structure, processing, properties and use of polymers. These giant molecules are the basis of synthetic materials including plastics, fibers, rubber, films, paints, membranes, and adhesives.
Founded in 1963 as the first department for education and research in polymers in the nation, and recognized around the world as one of the best polymer programs in existence , the Department of Macromolecular Science and Engineering at Case Western Reserve University is a world leader in all areas of polymer science and engineering. As the first accredited undergraduate program in the United States in this field, the department continues to provide cutting-edge education in this exciting field.

Master of Science Programs
Master’s Thesis (Plan A)
The minimum requirement to complete a Master’s degree under Plan A is 27 hours. Of the 27 hours, at least 18 hours must be coursework, and 9 hours must be thesis research. The normal residency period for an M.S. degree is 2 years. For completion of Master’s degrees Plan A, an oral examination (defense) of the Master’s thesis is required. Master’s Comprehensive (Plan B)
The Master's Plan B program is available for individuals who live out-of-state or are working full-time. A research report and oral examination is required before graduation. This option requires 27 total credit hours, which includes an independent study project and coursework.
Each candidate for the Master’s degree under Plan B must satisfactorily pass a comprehensive examination, which is administered by the department or curricular program committee. The examination may be written or oral or both. Some courses can be taken via Distance Learning or transfer credits. Review degree requirements and course descriptions in our General Bulletin.
