The Department of Mechanical Engineering (MECH) offers graduate programs that emphasize fundamental and applied aspects of mechanical engineering. Our mission is to prepare our graduates to apply basic and advanced engineering knowledge and skills to the research, analysis, and design of engineering systems. The Department's curricula are designed to put them on track to become leaders in the global workforce and/or to enter top-rated post-graduate programs. While we require a solid grounding in the fundamentals, we also provide instruction in state-of-the-art tools.
The graduate educational and research programs lead to degrees of Master of Science (M.S.), Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), and Master of Mechanical Engineering (M.M.E.). The M.S. and Ph.D. degrees require research and theses, while the M.M.E. is a non-thesis degree. Collaboration with other departments and institutes includes work with NASA to develop the next generation of space vehicles, research with Texas Medical Center institutions into haptic devices for rehabilitation and new orthopedic materials. These collaborations reflect the comprehensive scope of the research activities that make graduate study in MECH a worthy experience.
