Admission to this graduate program requires a background in civil engineering equivalent to that provided by the basic option of the Rice curriculum leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. These requirements are essentially equivalent to a structures major in civil engineering at many larger schools. Consideration will be given to applicants with some other undergraduate bachelor’s degree, provided that the preparation in mathematics, mechanics, and structural analysis and design is essentially equivalent to that described above, or provided that the deficiencies can be made up, without graduate credit, in a short time. However, degrees in areas such as engineering technology or building construction technology are not sufficient, and Rice has no program to remedy the deficiencies. Students are normally admitted in the spring for the following fall semester.
Minimum 3.0 GPA
minimum 301 (verbal + quantitative) GRE (exempt from Rice graduates with a GPA of 3.2 or higher).
2 years of calculus including differential equations, 1 year of chemistry, 1 semester of physics, and 1 semester of biology, fluid mechanics.
The application fee is $85 and should be paid by credit card.

Some departments at Rice University require scores on the aptitude portion of the GRE (Graduate Record Exam) or the GMAT (Graduate Management Admissions Test) as an appropriate advanced test; these should be sent directly to the admitting department. The ETS Reporting code for Rice University is 6609.

TOEFL and IELTS Requirements (for foreign applicants)
The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) test is required for any student requiring a visa. The TOEFL is administered through the Educational Testing Service, Box 6151, Princeton, New Jersey 08541-6151 USA [telephone (609) 771-7100]. You can also send an e-mail to toefl@ets.org or a center in your native country. The ETS Reporting code for Rice University is 6609.
Students whose native language is not English may also use the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). IELTS is owned, developed and delivered through the partnership of the British Council, IDP Education Australia: IELTS Australia and the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations. You can get more information about the IELTS at http://www.ielts.org or send an e-mail to ielts@ieltsintl.org. International applicants who choose to take the IELTS should plan to take the Academic IELTS test.
Applicants whose native language is not English must take the TOEFL test and should score at least 90 on the iBT (internet-based) TOEFL, at least 600 on the paper-based TOEFL or score 250 on the computer-based TOEFL. For students who choose to take the IELTS in lieu of TOEFL, the minimum score is 7.
The TOEFL and the IELTS may be waived for an international student who received a degree from an institution in which English is the official language of communication. Contact the admitting department for more information.
Transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate schools attended. Applicants must have at least a 3.0 (B) grade point average. If an unofficial transcript is received during the admissions process, and you are admitted, a 30 day deadline is given (from the date of the offer letter) to provide an official transcript. If the current degree has not yet been conferred, Rice requires a final transcript showing conferral of the degree before registration of the second semester at Rice. Note: All transcripts must arrive in signed-across-the-seal envelopes provided to you by the registrar of each institution attended.
Letters of Recommendation (LOR) are required from at least three former professors, advisors, and/or employer. All recommendation letters should be on university or employer letterhead. Recommenders can now submit their letters on-line.
