Admission to this program requires you to hold a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from a program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). You also need to have a 3.0 GPA or better. Applicants lacking a BS from an ABET-accredited program in civil engineering (including those possessing undergraduate degrees in other engineering disciplines, engineering science, engineering technology and architecture, or from a foreign university) will have their qualifications reviewed by a graduate adviser. Admission may be granted and may include the requirement for additional undergraduate courses to correct deficiencies. These additional courses are not counted toward the MS degree, nor are undergraduate courses included in computing graduate grade-point averages.
Payment of Tuition
Enrolling first-semester graduate students, either for Fall or Spring terms,
can expect to receive e-mailed information (through your official NU email
address) regarding tuition expenses approximately six weeks before the start of
the semester. Tuition due dates are set by the Office of the Bursar, and all
inquiries regarding payment of tuition should be directed to that office. Please
monitor your NYU e-mail for further information, tuition liability policies, and
deadline dates. Tuition payment options and payment plans are listed on the NYU
Bursar website.
Online Application
The Office of Graduate Admissions requires all applicants to complete the online application and does not accept paper-based applications. If you have any issues with submitting an application via the online application system, please contact our office. The application must be completed and electronically submitted on or before the posted deadline for the term of entry. After you submit the online application, you will not have access to edit or change the information you have supplied. If you wish to submit updated documentation, you must mail it to our document processing center. Documents received from the student via email will not be accepted to processed.
Application Fee
The application fee is $75 and is payable in the online system by major credit card. If you are having problems submitting your payment via Credit Card, please contact the Office of Graduate Enrollment Management and Admissions. If paying the application fee poses a financial hardship for you, we don’t want that to stop you from applying. You may request an application fee waiver by using the link on the first page of your application. Fill out a short form to receive the fee waiver code.
Statement of Purpose/Personal Statement
Typewritten, double-spaced, well-organized, one- to two-page statement explaining why you wish to pursue graduate study in your particular program at our particular school. This is your opportunity to introduce yourself and to inform the department about your goals, interests, and career plans as they relate to your intended academic pursuits. Please make sure to include your name (as it appears on your application), program and date. This document will be uploaded to your online application and need not be mailed.
Résumé
A copy of your most recent résumé or curriculum vitae must be uploaded to the online application and need not be mailed.
Official Transcripts and Degree Conferral
Official transcripts are required and must be received before an application is reviewed. To complete your application, submit official transcripts and proof of your undergraduate degree (if completed) from all previously attended post-secondary institutions, even if you were not a matriculated student and/or did not complete an academic program. Failure to submit all academic records will delay the processing of your application, and failure to report all schools attended may result in admission rescission or withdrawal from consideration.
Academic Records and Proof of Degree from Indian Institutions
Official University-issued or attested copies of college transcripts or a consolidated statement of marks
If sending attested copies of your mark sheets, the attestation must be made by (and only by) the Comptroller of Examinations or Registrar from the degree-granting institution and received in a sealed envelope from the institution.
If a degree has been earned at the time of application, an attested copy of the official Degree Certificate must be submitted. If the Degree Certificate is not yet available, an attested copy of the official Provisional Degree will be accepted for admission purposes only.
Note that academic records that are not in English are subject to the guidelines below (“Transcripts not in English from any country”)
Transcripts Not Officially Issued in English from Any Country
For any transcript that is not officially issued in English by the institution, an English-language translation is required. (Dual-language transcripts issued by the institution are acceptable and do not require translation.)
All translations must be:
Complete and literal (word-for-word and line-by-line), replicating the original as precisely as possible with no attempts at interpretation or evaluation
Prepared in the same format as the original document
Typed on organization or school letterhead/stationery
Signed or stamped by an approved translator (see below)
Official translations may be provided by one of the following:
The institution issuing the transcript
A consulate or embassy of the United States or of the institution’s country
A professional, certified and/or accredited translation agency
Translations will not be accepted from:
The applicant or members of his/her family
Individuals not affiliated with any of the organizations listed above.
Transcripts in English from Any Other Country
Official transcripts must be received by us in a sealed envelope from the institution.
A Note on Credential Evaluation Services
The Graduate Enrollment Management & Admissions office conducts an independent, external evaluation of credentials (at no additional cost to the student). As such, there is no need to submit additional course-by-course evaluations. Please submit only the official transcripts.
Testing Information
Find out if your program requires the GRE or GMAT here: GRE/GMAT Requirements. Your official test scores must be on file before your application will be reviewed.
GRE scores are valid for 5 years. The GRE must be taken again if your GRE scores are older than 5 years at the time of application submission.
All Ph.D. programs require the GRE.
The GRE requirement will be waived for undergraduate applicants coming from NYU who have a 3.0 GPA and are applying for the Computer Science MS with one of the following conditions: 1) Applicants who have successfully completed the Bridge to Tandon Program. 2) Applicants who have completed 9 credits of approved courses under the Visiting Student Registration Program (with an average grade of B+ or better). 3) Applicants who have a BA or BS degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering from NYU (with GPA of 3.0 in major courses).
The GRE requirement will be waived for undergraduate applicants to the Civil and Urban Engineering department who have a 3.0 GPA and have earned a BS degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management from NYU.
The GRE requirement will be waived for undergraduate applicants to the Financial Engineering MS who have a 3.5 GPA and have earned a BS degree in Mathematics or Computer Science from NYU.
Applicants who are applying for full-time enrollment must submit official GRE scores electronically through ETS (the NYU Tandon School of Engineering ETS institution code is 2668 ). The MS in Integrated Digital Media is the only exception and does not require GRE scores for full-time applicants.
Applicants who are applying for part-time enrollment in the following programs must also submit official GRE scores for admission: Biomedical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Electrical Engineering, Financial Engineering, and Systems Engineering
GMAT scores may be substituted for the GRE only for applicants to the Management and Management of Technology programs. GMAT scores are valid for 5 years; the GMAT must be taken again if your GMAT scores are older than 5 years at the time of application submission. You must send GMAT scores electronically by searching for the name of the institution.
If the GRE is required for your application, an official GRE score report must be sent electronically to NYU Tandon School of Engineering via the ETS institution code 2668 ; a departmental code is not required. Visit the ETS website for more information about the exam.

Today’s populations are growing at exponential rates. The pace strains the built environment, with our shared civic infrastructure — our bridges, dams, airports, and highways, among other resources — nearing capacity levels. Civil engineers respond to the issue by improving existing systems and designing projects that answer the new challenges raised by modern society. Our MS program in Civil Engineering trains you to join their ranks. You can specialize in any of the following concentrations:
construction management and engineering
structural engineering
geotechnical engineering
environmental and water resource engineering
urban systems engineering and management
highway and traffic engineering
Our program is flexible, and you may elect for a more general course of study by taking 2 courses in 3 areas of concentration.
