IN GOOD STANDING
To be in good standing, the Graduate School requires that students maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 and must have successfully completed 66 percent of credits attempted while at NYU, not including the current semester. Courses with grades of IP, IF, N, W, and F are not considered successfully completed.
ACADEMIC PROBATION
If academic performance falls below either the Graduate School or departmental standard, students are automatically placed on academic probation. Departments provide written notification to the students of their probationary status. Students will have until the end of the next complete semester following the date of the probation letter in which to meet the criteria set by the departments. Students on probation are not eligible for extensions of time to degree, waivers of Maintenance of Matriculation Fees, or extensions of IP or IF grades.
TERMINATION
If the student does not meet the criteria within the time limit, they will be formally terminated from the graduate program. Students may reapply for readmission no sooner than one year following termination.
RIGHT OF APPEAL
Students have the right to appeal termination, a probation decision, or the criteria set for the reversal of probation within one month of date of the letter announcing the assignment of termination or probation. Students may file a written appeal with the departmental Director of Graduate Studies.
Admission to the M.A. program in economics is limited to students of outstanding promise. Our program has become increasingly competitive over the last 5 years, as we seek to emphasize the analytical rigor of our program. First and foremost, we aim to admit students with excellent training in economics and quantitative methods - that is, students with grades of A-, A or A+ in economics and mathematics courses at undergraduate level. More specifically, strong applicants will meet the following requirements:
GRE Quantitative reasoning score > 80th percentile (= 160 on new scale; 750 on old scale)
GRE Analytical writing score > 80th percentile (= 5.0)GRE Verbal reasoning score > 50th percentile (= 150 on new scale; 500 on old scale)
Two undergraduate calculus courses (or one calculus & one linear algebra course)
One statistics course & one course in econometrics
Intermediate Microeconomics and Intermediate Macroeconomics, plus four other undergraduate economics courses
Overall GPA of 3.5 and above at the undergraduate level
TOEFL > 105 (internet-based version) (TOEFL requirement is for international students only—see below*)
A strong application will have ‘A’ grades in most of these courses (i.e. undergraduate economics, calculus, statistics & econometrics).
Please note that we only accept GRE scores. The GRE general test is required for all applicants. No exceptions are granted. GMAT will not be accepted in place of the general GRE.
We evaluate applications on their general merits. What is important is the total picture of an applicant's competence, not performance on an individual criterion. For example, we want to attract applicants who have completed a degree in mathematics, engineering or physics but who may have done only introductory but not necessarily intermediate economics courses. However, such applicants, if admitted into our program, have to complete intermediate economics courses BEFORE enrolling in our program (e.g. at any reputable university during the summer before the start of the fall semester).
All international students must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
(See http://www.toefl.org/.) Exceptions to this rule include students who obtained a degree from English-speaking college-level institutions and students from English-speaking countries, such as the United Kingdom and Australia.
All applicants to the Graduate School of Arts and Science (GSAS) are required to submit a complete application for admission. A complete application includes the online application, academic transcripts, test scores, letters of recommendation, a résumé or curriculum vitae, a Statement of Academic Purpose, and the application fee. Please refer to the Instructions section of the online application for full details. In addition, the department specifically requires the following:
GRE and TOEFL or IELTS: GRE general test required. Either the TOEFL or the IELTS is required of all applicants who are not native English speakers or who do not have a bachelor's or master's degree from an institution where the language of instruction is English. See test score requirements.
Statement of Academic Purpose: In a concisely written statement, please describe your past and present work as it relates to your intended field of study, your educational objectives, and your career goals. In addition, please include your intellectual and professional reasons for choosing your field of study and why your studies/research can best be done at the Graduate School of Arts and Science at NYU. The statement should not exceed two double-spaced pages.
Writing Sample (Ph.D. and Ph.D.-J.D. applicants): Not required, but evidence of original research is encouraged.
Writing Sample (M.A. and M.A.-J.D. applicants): Not required; not accepted.
Important Note for Applicants to the Master's Programs: All master's applicants must complete all parts of the online application, including the section labeled "Courses Taken" which requests information on economics and math courses completed previously.

A master’s degree in economics is an increasingly essential tool in a global economy. The M.A. program in economics at New York University is one of the most rigorous in the country. It will give you a solid background in advanced economics and enable you to upgrade your skills in applied economic analysis and public policy. It can also serve as an excellent preparatory degree for those students wishing to go on to a Ph.D. program elsewhere in the U.S. Some of our MA Economic graduates have gone on to pursue a PhD at the following universities: University of Chicago, University of Minnesota, UCLA, University of Oxford, Ohio State, Georgetown and NYU.
JOB OPPORTUNITIES
Candidates who hold a master’s degree in economics have much better employment prospects than those of bachelor’s degree holders, and they also obtain a higher median base salary than candidates with bachelor’s degrees (from Occupational Outlook Handbook, Bureau of Labor Statistics). Opportunities for economists range from positions in the business world in banking, insurance, investment and communications firms to those in academic settings, government agencies, trade associations and consulting organizations. Our students are employed at such companies and organizations as: American Express, Credit Suisse, Goldman/Sachs/& Co., Smart Money Magazine, Time Magazine, Citigroup, Deutsches Bank, Bloomberg Communications, AIG Insurance Company, Moody’s Economy.Com, The IMF, Federal Reserve Bank of New York and the Royal Bank of Canada
NYU ECONOMICS ALUMNI CLUB
A degree is more than a paper diploma; it is experiences, friendships and opportunities that never graduate. NYU M.A. Economics Alumni Club is an independent student and alumni volunteer coordinated club for our M.A. Economics Family. Please check out the website for alumni news, upcoming events, job postings, career discussions, alumni marketplace and more. Join us to receive exclusive invitations to both NYU Department of Economic sponsored events as well as private social networking parties.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
The M.A. degree in economics requires a minimum of three semesters of full-time study. The time limit for completion of the degree is five years for both full- and part-time students.
Course of Study: Formal requirements for the Master of Arts degree in economics are the satisfactory completion of graduate studies totaling at least 32 points and the writing of a special project report. In order to graduate, students must complete at least 24 points within the Department of Economics at New York University (i.e., courses with a G31 prefix). (Transfer credits do not count toward this requirement.) Most courses carry 3 points; the special project carries 2 points. Students must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 (B) with 18 points of B (3.0) or better. Students may take 8 points outside the Department of Economics.
The M.A. degree requires five core courses, five elective courses, and a special project in economic research.
The five core courses are Mathematics for Economists (G31.1001), Microeconomic Theory (G31.1003), Macroeconomic Theory I (G31.1005), Applied Statistics and Econometrics I (G31.1101), and Applied Statistics and Econometrics II (G31.1102).
Special Project in Economic Research (G31.3200) is taken in the final or penultimate semester. The aim of the course is to integrate material and tools that have been taught throughout the M.A. program in addressing applied economic and policy problems. Students are encouraged to approach research questions from outside a narrow specialization and to consider linkages between different fields.
Elective courses are selected from the department’s regular course offerings. Students may also select relevant courses at the NYU Leonard N. Stern School of Business. This strategy is designed to give students a well-rounded education that will be useful after graduation in the nonacademic world. In addition to regular courses in economics, students take courses in finance, accounting, international business, and operations research at Stern. Highly qualified M.A. students preparing for a Ph.D. program may also take courses in the graduate division of the Department of Mathematics at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, which offers balanced training in mathematics and its applications in the broadest sense.
