AM I ELIGIBLE FOR THE 1-YEAR M.ARCH PROGRAM?
Students who have graduated from Northeastern’s School of Architecture with a B.S. in Architecture with at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA are eligible to apply to the 1-year Master’s Program.
Students with an accredited five-year Bachelor of Architecture degree are also eligible.
AM I ELIGIBLE FOR THE 2-YEAR M.ARCH PROGRAM?
Applicants to the 2-year Master’s Program must have a B.S in Architecture (or equivalent). If you have an undergraduate degree other than that, you should check with the School of Architecture to determine the correct program. Students should have an Intro Design Studio plus four architecture studios/two semesters of architecture history (survey + Modern)/Statics/Structures and Building Construction/Tectonics.
If students don’t have the minimum noted above, they may still be eligible with some additional course work. The below are some possible scenarios for students without the above courses.
2-year + Design-if you have:
Intro Design Studio plus two architecture studios/two semesters of architecture history (survey + Modern)/Statics/Structures and Building Construction/Tectonics
You will need to take an additional Design Studio
2-year + Design/History-if you have:
Intro Design Studio plus two architecture studios/two semesters of architecture history (survey but no Modern)/Statics/Structures and Building Construction/Tectonics
You will need to take an additional Design Studio + Modern Architecture
2-year + Design/History/Technology-if you have:
Intro Design Studio plus two architecture studios/two semesters of architecture history (survey but no Modern)/Statics/Structures.
You will need to take an additional Design Studio + Modern Architecture + Building Construction/Tectonics
DO I NEED A PORTFOLIO?
All applicants to the 1-year program who did not receive a BS in Architecture from NU MUST apply with a portfolio.
All applicants to the 2-year program MUST apply with a portfolio.
Applicants to the 1-year who received a BS in Architecture from NU and applicants to the 3-year programs do not need one.
WHAT ARE THE STARTING DATES TO THE PROGRAM?
All M.Arch programs programs start in September.
MDES-SUEN programs have Fall and Spring starts.
I HAVE A DEGREE IN ARCHITECTURAL STUDIES. DO I APPLY TO THE 2-YEAR PROGRAM OR THE 3-YEAR PROGRAM?
If you do not have a B.S. degree in Architecture or equivalent, you will need to consult with the director of the graduate program to see what your status should be.
I AM APPLYING TO THE 3-YEAR PROGRAM BUT I DO NOT HAVE A PORTFOLIO. WILL THIS HURT MY CHANCES?
No. Since applicants to the 3-year program may not have taken classes in architecture, a portfolio is not expected from them.
SO I NEED TO HAVE TAKEN CALCULUS AND PHYSICS BEFORE APPLYING TO THE 3-YEAR PROGRAM?
Applicants to the MArch 3 program must have taken one semester of college-level physics and one semester of college-level calculus. Students who enter into the program without physics and calculus have one year from the date of matriculation to complete and pass these courses, which can be taken outside Northeastern.

The physical and cultural context of Boston serves as a laboratory for the program’s design studios and is design-focused, but with a different approach than many schools. We find opportunities for innovation within the real estate and construction industries and current policy debates – rather than outside of them. This is how we intend to move architects to the center of the discussion about the future of our cities.
Students take courses in urban housing, practice integrated design and do original research on market-driven building types. The final degree project in the design studio offers an opportunity to leverage this research with real innovations in hybrid types, strategic alterations to existing ones, and to take on the challenge of finding prototypical solutions for systemic problems.
In addition to studio courses, graduate students take seminars in architectural theory and design strategy; and electives are available in real estate development, sustainable building techniques, urban landscape, and other topics. There is also a unique course that looks at case studies of architecture firms in practice, problem solving, and innovation. Students will leave our program with a unique balance of technical, theoretical, and strategic tools to make a real difference in the profession.
