Applicants to the Master of Science program must have a Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, information systems, electrical engineering, or a closely related field from an accredited academic institution. Candidates must have taken undergraduate courses on programming, data structures, hardware, architecture, algorithms, and mathematics, such as discrete mathematics, calculus, linear algebra, probability, and statistics. They must have a grade-point average of at least 3.0 in their undergraduate studies.
1.Non-refundable Application Fee
The application fee for the 2018 academic year is $90 ($140 for the Special Master's in Physiology program). The fee can be paid by Visa or MasterCard only.
2. Academic Statement of Purpose
An academic statement of purpose should be prepared and submitted online with the application. The personal statement should address your intellectual interests, academic and professional objectives, and proposed topic(s) of graduate study. The length of the personal statement is generally 500 words, but some programs have different or additional guidelines for submission of the statement of purpose.
3. Official Transcripts
Applicants for admission must provide hard copy official transcripts of ALL work beyond secondary school -- undergraduate coursework, graduate coursework, study abroad courses, community college courses, and non-degree courses. A transcript is official when:
submitted directly to the Graduate School in an envelope which is issued by the institution and sealed by your university's Registrar's office (or equivalent office)
submitted to the Graduate School from the institution via a secure electronic delivery, such as Scrip-Safe
Applicants for admission will need to provide official transcripts or documents showing conferral of all degrees previously awarded. If a particular degree has not been awarded at the time of application, the Graduate School will request documentation of the degree conferral at the time of admission. Admitted students intending to matriculate must submit all documentation of coursework and degrees awarded before class registration.
Official foreign transcripts should be accompanied by a notarized translation into English. The official notarized translation should be submitted to the Graduate School in a sealed envelope, signed across the seal by the notary.
International applicants who attend institutions outside of the United States are strongly encouraged to submit their transcripts in the form of World Education Services (WES) ICAP evaluations and should note that official transcripts are delivered electronically with their evaluations through WES. WES evaluations can take the place of official transcripts as long as they come to the Graduate School directly from WES and include a copy of the official transcripts you had evaluated. Applicants may use other credential evaluation services that are members of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) but must still submit official transcripts from the institution to Georgetown if the evaluation does not include an official copy of the transcripts you had evaluated.
Photocopied/faxed/scanned documents cannot be used to fulfill this requirement.
4. Official Recommendations
Three official recommendations are required by the Graduate School unless your program only mandates two. These recommendations must be from persons in positions to appraise the applicant's potential for graduate study.
The Graduate School requires use of the online recommendation system, which utilizes a secure online recommendation system that will:
automatically email your recommendation providers with instructions for online submission of the recommendation.
allow applicants to track recommendations received or not received and follow up with recommenders who still need to submit their appraisals.
expedite the processing of the recommendations, which will be included in the online application once submitted.
automatically notify you when recommendations have been received.
5. Official Test Results
Most departments and programs require applicants to take standardized entrance examinations, such as the GRE, GRE subject tests, GMAT, MCAT or others. Please refer to Academic Programs for the examinations required by individual programs. All official examination results must be:
submitted by the application deadline listed in the Admissions Requirements section of each graduate program listing
taken no later than one month prior to the application deadline for the program
received directly from the appropriate testing organization
sent to the Photocopied/faxed/scanned documents will not fulfill this requirement.
6. English Proficiency: TOEFL/IELTS
All applicants are required to demonstrate a level of proficiency in the English language sufficient to meet the admission requirement of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. Proficiency can be demonstrated by the receipt of a bachelor's or advanced degree from an accredited institution of higher education in the United States or from a university where English is the primary language of instruction (please note that applicants receiving degrees at universities in U.S. territories, such as Puerto Rico, are required to submit the TOEFL or IELTS unless the primary language of instruction at the institution is English).
All other applicants must achieve at least a minimum score on either the TOEFL or IELTS test. Test scores must be received by the application deadline date. Applicants should allow six to eight weeks from the test date for the reporting of scores to the institution. Applications will not be considered without TOEFL/IELTS scores.
TOEFL: A minimum score of 550 or 600 (paper-based) or 80 or 100 (iBT test) dependent on program requirements, on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Georgetown University's score reporting code is: 5244. TOEFL information: http://www.ets.org/toefl/
